It's possible... The Player Killer used the Castle of Dark Illusions to cast a field of darkness that nobody could see through. But that was on a small scale.

If that's the case, I wonder if the sun has actually been stopped, or if we just can't see or feel it. If there's some kind of field over the island that's keeping it from us, that would explain the stars being so weird.
