DUEL 003: The Bored Spirit At Play
[To say that Bakura's been in a good mood lately is an understatement.
Thanks to the thief king, he has the eighth key that he needs once he gets out of here. It's frustrating being trapped in this place, but he's spent so long with the Ring's imprisonment that it's easy to cope with this. It's just a waiting game. It always has been.
It's said that the greatest enemy of the immortal is boredom. For Bakura, that's an understatement. There weren't many duelists around, getting rid of people wasn't possible with the curse upon this place bringing them back, and the problem with letting his darker instincts out was that in this place, there was no way to get away with it without word spreading too fast, or his victims recovering. How tedious! Even if he took their souls, this place would probably return them to their bodies before long. He couldn't even pursue the remainder of his collection, with Shadi not being accessible.
So for now, he's sitting on the ground in the courtyard despite the cold, working with a much more mundane hobby. He's making a marionette.
It's not quite finished, but it might look familiar... It looks a surprising amount like a creepier version of a certain young boy with ridiculous hair. It's symbolic! And it isn't the only one there. Hanging over the nearest doorway, waiting to fall down on anyone who opens the door to come outside, is a slightly more intimidating one...]

Finding me, yes. Since you had no other options...
Well, I suppose I'm all right with being a last resort, as long as the game is entertaining.
no subject
...last resort? I don't think that's quite the right term. We'd enjoy having you. But if you didn't want to play, then that wouldn't matter.
Anyway, I'm sure you'll enjoy it at least a little. Even if you've never played a TRPG before, they're quite involving.
no subject
Involving... right, because you've got to act in-character, I guess?
no subject
A good DM will draw you in, so you won't feel like you're acting at all. But you're right. It's a game where you can be whatever you want to be. Escapism at its finest.
no subject
[she looks back over at the fell Zorc puppet, remembering he said he used to roleplay him.]
I'll be watching your character... [she chuckles.]
no subject
[And that's really all that matters.]
But I'm not the DM, so Zorc won't be appearing in this game, I'm sure. I had Ryou recreate my Human Thief figurine for me. [A little wickedly:] ...though it would be wise to keep an eye on my character anyway.
no subject
[Not when Bakura is the untrustworthy one!]
no subject
[An actual game... that wasn't the occasional duel with Judai. It had been too long.
And thus Bakura's barely-hidden nerdy side was revealed. Well. He was a roleplayer after all.]
no subject
[because she isn't aware that he hasn't been playing games with anyone... Harriet's had a constant source of gaming even before training Malik. It helps to have several roommates that would duel you just to stay sharp.]
no subject
[The sarcasm isn't so evident this time. He really does like the game. But the truth is, he's feeling kind of jealous of his host. Ryou and Yugi are always playing games together... even Judai, who at least duels him sometimes gets in on it. But he hardly gets to play these days.]
If there was one thing I could claim to have no regrets about, it would be games. They're supposed to be little more than tools, but I always have fun with them even so.
no subject
[Spirits are so bloody weird.]
no subject
After all, most games originated as a way of playing 'war'. We don't usually play for fun. When a dark duelist plays a game... it's usually with someone's life at stake.
But even so, I find them too enjoyable to just play for stakes. It's just that I rarely get to play them for fun alone.
no subject
[she waves her hand around absently.]
I'd ask why you didn't just ask someone then, but I imagine it's difficult to get someone to accept an invitation for fun once word's gotten around that you mainly play games to the death.
Unless you're me, apparently. But look at me, I'm clearly nuts.
no subject
[Bakura straightens up, fixing her with a stern look. Really, this girl...]
Your fate was sealed the moment you became close to Malik. You're no longer capable of being targeted by me.
no subject
[Some would say that becoming close to Malik is in fact the thing that makes her nuts. In fact, it should not surprise him if they already have, or if one of those voices is sometimes herself. She'd only meant it as a self-depreciating joke, though, so she didn't expect to be corrected. "Your fate is sealed", wording it in such a creepy way... still, he went out of his way to do that...]
You're giving me such a firm look. Did it bother you to hear me say that?
no subject
O-oi... Idiot, don't make it sound like I was concerned about you or something like that! I was just making sure you understood that you were privileged enough to not have to worry about that bullshit! It's not like I make a habit out of being concerned for people!
[Damn. How did people handle this sort of nonsense?]
no subject
I know you don't, so I wanted to know why you'd go out of your way like that? I really would have thought someone like you would thrive on my suspicion, even if it was in jest... but you're the one who said it, not me! Now I know where we stand. Thanks for clearing that up, mate.
no subject
What?! I'm telling you not to assume the wrong thing! I didn't say it out of any sort of worry for your well-being! I just didn't want you to be misinformed and jump to weird conclusions! It'd be awkward if you started being wary of me right when we got you to agree to play with us!
[And now he's repeating himself. Great. Pull yourself together! It's not like she's going to run through the streets shouting about it or anything like that! Why're you so flustered?!]
no subject
"Started" being wary of you? Bakura, please. Do you think I forget about all that shit until you remind me of it? Wariness was my default state when it came to dealing with you. And for many highly justified reasons. At first, it was weird even talking to you.
[The first time they really did was the room with the red strings. She'll never forget how horribly awkward she felt, talking to him about normal things when she'd thought of him only as a monster in stolen skin. Talking about love... anyway.]
You should have realized from how readily I accepted to begin with... but what's really started is me being able to move past that. Even if I still make a joke or two about it... which is what that was, incidentally. I was just kidding, you bloody moron!
[Harriet bumps his shoulder teasingly and smirks, looking up at him.]
... But oh well. The way you're stumbling all over yourself to correct me is still really touching.
no subject
[Truthfully, he was a monster in stolen skin. He just happened to be one with a human side. It wasn't a side he hated, but it wasn't a side he liked, either. Humans were powerless. More importantly... This was awkward. Malik was the only one who'd managed to get him as flustered as that before. That Harriet was able to get under his skin like that... Did that mean he liked her?
Stupid human emotions.
He stares at her curiously in response to the shoulder bump, smiling slightly despite his embarrassment.]
Don't think anything major of it! I wasn't in control of my words.
no subject
Hm, fair enough.
[And now that he's calmed down, she's not sure why he's staring at her like that. She finally lets out a laugh, a little awkward sounding.]
Well, if you weren't, who was?
no subject
[He's just glad she didn't hear half the shit he said to Malik when Malik started making those crossdressing jokes a while back.
Social butterfly, he is not.]
no subject
All right, all right. It happens to the best of us.
[then why is she still grinning]
no subject
[Yes, why is she still grinning?]
Of course it does. It happened to me.
[...he is only joking. Though there's enough of his own bloated self-respect in there to make it sound less so.]
