[Kai's managed to dig up at least two books on memories, but they aren't as simple as 'How to recover lost memories in five easy steps'. The books he's found look to be similar to the spellbooks he's studying from, and that means he's definitely going to need Karasu's help going through them. Even if they find something useful, he wouldn't dare try to cast anything on her; he's hoping it'll at least point them in the right direction. Kai has a sneaking suspicion the Creeper's involved in the mess somewhere, just based on what Karasu had told him.

Honestly, if it weren't for Ryou...

Kai takes another bite of his carrot stick and glances over at the closed bedroom door from where he's sprawled on the couch, flipping through pages. He'd put Surge in just a while ago, and so far the big Labrador's being as quiet as a mouse.]

Kai-kun, it's me. Can I come in?

Uh-

[Wait, she's here already? Funny how you could lose track of time eating carrots and staring mindlessly at a random paragraph.]

Just a sec, I'll let you in!

[Kai scrambles up and over to the door, unlocking it to grin at her.]

C'mon in, Surge is already asleep...or gnawing his toys to death, one of the two.

[He moves out of the way, absently playing with the carrot.]

Aww. I was hoping to see him! I love dogs.

[Oh well. Karasu goes over to the couch, picking up one of the books to start thumbing through it.]

Did you find anything yet?

You can look in on him later, if you want. Just be ready to get knocked over.

[He laughs and locks up after her, ditching the remainder of the carrot in the kitchen before coming back.]

Nope. Haven't really settled in to read them yet; they definitely look like they go the magic route though. That could be promising.

[Kai drops onto the couch, poking at the other book on the coffee table with his index finger.]

You ought to see this one, the print's so fancy I'm still trying to figure some of it out.

I'm not sure if that's comforting or worrying.

[She reaches over to do just that, grabbing the book and looking through it.]

...What is this printed in? Some sort of handwriting?

It could at least give us some ideas, I'm not going to try anything out on you.

[He makes a face at the thought. He's done a lot of stupid stuff lately, but that would be going too far.]

Yeah, calligraphy. The one where 'S' looks like 'F'. Kind of why I started looking through the other one, it was making my brain melt. But I can get back to that!

[Yes Kai, because you're supposed to be helping her, not whining about a calligraphy-induced headache.]

I appreciate that.

[She looks at the book again, signs, then puts it down.]

Kai-kun... can I talk to you about something important?

[Kai sits back and raises an eyebrow at the question, then nods.]

Yeah, sure. What's the matter?

The darkness magic you use. Why are you using it?

[Okay, that...catches him off guard. Kai just sort of blinks at Karasu for a second. What?]

Because...it's me. Part of me, I mean. What brought that on?

...What do you mean, "part of you?"

[Where'd this come from? He hasn't been going Creeper himself and not noticed, has he?

Oh Light what a thought.]

It's- I told you once about my mom, and her connection to the Darkness. I was just...born with it. I don't know how it works.

[That actually kind of irritates him. Kai pushes his bangs out of his eyes and frowns.]

Nobody bothered to tell me I could do anything with it. Maybe they didn't think it was possible. Didn't even open the Corridors the first time until-

[He stops, shaking his head. Nope. Not dealing with that. Instead he looks back to Karasu, the frown lingering.]

[Born with it... Bakura's guess about "nature" was more spot-on than he ever knew. Karasu sighs a little, sitting down and folding her hands in her lap.]

Because... it's opposite to my "nature."

I don't like the feel of it. It makes me uncomfortable, just feels so completely wrong. And Bakura-kun said that darkness... is like a poison. It spreads and spreads until the person using it is drowned completely. I was hoping it was just magic, and that maybe you could stop it, but...

[Sigh. What is she supposed to say here? She can't just tell him to stop if it's something that's in his very blood, can she?]

...I don't trust it. It doesn't like me, I'm sure. And I don't think anything could happen. Between us, I mean, if that was a threat. I just feel like... it would lash out at me the first chance it got.

...But- it's not a poison, it's who I am.

[Bakura. That manipulative dick. For just the smallest of moments, Kai really does have the urge to go hurt the bastard, but he squashes it quickly. No need to prove him right. Instead he just shakes his head before staring at Karasu in something close to shock. What?]

I'd never hurt you! I'm in control of it, not the other way around. I only use it for the stupid Corridors anyway, it's not like I've been screwing around summoning Heartless.

[Ignore that one time, because that was a fluke. A creepy, dangerous fluke, but Kai's made damn sure it won't happen again. It takes his brain a second to catch up to that last, and he laughs. Nope, not amused.]

Karasu, most of my Keyblades are Light. If it was that big a problem, would I even be able to wield those?

[He knows damn well it's the strength of his Heart that lets him do that, but he needs an argument here.]

I know, Kai-kun. At least, I do now. But I was just explaining what I had been told, and why I was asking. If it was, then... well, I wanted to help you with it. You know?

[She seems to be a little reassured, but it's the last part that makes he relax the most. Light... that's right, she saw a couple when he showed them to her. And they certainly felt very right, which probably meant...

Ah-heh. She looks down at her hands, suddenly feeling embarrassed.]

No, I don't think so. That's a good point.

[Ug... now she just feels like a moron for ever bringing it up.]

I'm sorry. I guess... I'm still stupid when it comes to magic.

[Kai sighs and falls back against the couch. Damn.]

I'm surprised Bakura's concerned about it. Well, it was more for you, probably. Still, he should talk to me before getting you worried about things that might not be true.

[He lifts a hand to reach out to her, almost drops it, then touches her shoulder.]

You're not stupid. It's just new stuff. Weird stuff. And...it's okay. I'm not mad.

[At her, anyway.]

If I was having a problem with it, I wouldn't have minded your help. But everything's okay, promise. I've got it under control.

Bakura-kun's a very good friend. He's taken care of me for a long time, even when I was so badly hurt I couldn't move, so... maybe I tend to take his word too quickly. It just feels hard to not do that after what he's done to try and help me out. ...He was the first person that wasn't afraid of me, do you know?

[She looks up at the touch, smiling a little in relief. Oh, good... she didn't mess this up.]

...Did I tell you before, Kai-kun? That I haven't really had many friends. It's a relief that you're not mad. I didn't mean to make it sound as bad as I did... I was just worried about you. But if everything's okay... then that's good.

Yeah...friends like that are worth holding onto.

[At least they are when they're not actually wolves pretending to be sheep. Ugh. Why does this have to be so complicated?]

I remember. But you've still got me, so it's fine. Nothing to worry about.

[Kai gives her a small smile. He can pretend. Everything's fine. Bakura didn't manage to find one of his weaknesses, nope. The possibility of anyone, but especially her, being scared of him because of what he could do? Not.A.Problem.]

You know, I should've gotten you a soda or something earlier, or you can peek in on Surge. I know it's not working on this, but he's cute when he sleeps.

Mhm.

[Thankfully, Kai's put Karasu's fear to rest, so he won't have to worry about showing that in front of Bakura. She stands up, smoothing out her hoodie a little.]

I'd like to peek in on him. I ate before I came here, though, so I'm not very hungry. I wouldn't say no to water, though.

I'll get you some.

[Kai jumps up and heads to the kitchen, calling back over his shoulder.]

He's probably under the bed against the wall. It's his favorite when I'm not trying to sleep. Then I'm his favorite bed.

[He laughs, genuinely this time, and goes to get a glass out of the cupboard.]

[Karasu giggles a little at that, then goes to open the bedroom door, walking in to bend down and look under the bed.

[Sorry, no cute little doggy here, hope you don't mind a cute big doggy! Surge had been dozing, but he'd woken up not long ago when he'd smelled someone familiar. Hope you don't mind a sudden lick in the face, Karasu!]

Ah!

[She laughs at that, reaching over to playfully rub his head and ears.]

Hello, there!

[And now you've got a yellow Lab crawling out from under the bed to try and sit on you, panting happily. Kai snickers from the doorway, water in one hand.]

Well, he's definitely happy to see you. Down Surge!

[Surge does indeed stop trying to climb on Karasu, dropping obediently to his haunches. Kai lets out a sigh of relief. Finally.]

About time.

"About time?" Does he not listen to you much?

[Karasu gives Surge a kiss on the nose, scratching behind his ears lovingly.]

You need to listen to Kai, okay, boy?
