ANNOUNCEMENT 012
[Whoops. She's running a little late it seems, for today, the intercoms buzz into action a little late.]
Ahem. Attention, students!
[The husky voice of - well, the Voice that speaks over the intercom - echoes through the halls.]
Now that we're all done with our bout of spring sickness, it's time to buckle down to our studies! Remember that tests may appear at any time, and it would be such a shame if you were all to fail and be kept back another year.
And don't forget to be welcoming to our new arrivals, won't you? They're quite behind the times, after all.
[Click.]

I haven't seen mine since I was a kid, but I can pretty much guess what her 'advice' would be. 'Stay away from us, we're trouble.' [Really, Maya would've been serious.]
Your mom sounds smart. [He laughs as he pushes his bangs out of his eyes.] I think being a dad would be pretty neat- [Wait, stop.] Someday! A really long time from now...and I'd be doing a lot of nice things for their mom if the kid turned out to be anything like me.
[Kai has a feeling he'd be apologizing constantly for that. Trouble seems to literally run in his blood.]
no subject
Well, they're that. But they're worth it. [He knows that he has some of his father in him and he deeply, deeply wishes that he didn't. But it's there. An angry raging asshole on one hand, his mother's desire to take care of people on the other. They're not a useful mix.] My mother is the smartest, kindest, most intelligent person I know.
...But if she was your girlfriend, I don't know how this place works. Do you have condoms here? [This is suddenly relevant to his interests too. Eventually, at some point, Niko's going to go want to get some.]
no subject
Karasu's sure worth it. [At least Niko knows where he gets things from. Kai has no idea what his biological father's like, so he tends to assume most of his behavior issues are inherited from his mom.
It's pretty close to the mark, actually.]
That's a big 'if'. I'm not sure how she felt about me before I screwed up. Maybe I had a chance then, but I kind of doubt it now. [So does that mean he's just going to give up and not bother? ...Doubtful.] 'Sides, I can't even hold her hand without going three different shades of red and-
[Wait, back up, condoms? Oh Light. Kai stares hard at Niko, the blush from earlier coming right back. Geeze.]
I, uh. Um. There's...yeah. [Coherent thought. This is something he knows how to do...once he's done getting his brain to reboot, anyway.]
The nurse's office. Stumbled over some when I was raiding for painkillers once. [And then he'd died a couple deaths and put them back before getting the hell out of dodge.]

[Niko has a lot of trouble telling "good ideas" from "bad ideas". It's a chronic condition.]
Maybe it doesn't do me so much good. Not many ladies that are my age around here.
[It's like March of the Dicks. Jesus.]
no subject
[So does Kai. It's how he gets himself into so much trouble, but really, at least half his ideas seem like good ones at the time.]
But it's the responsible thing to do, I know. Raising a kid while trapped here would be brain breaking and horrific, honestly. [He spends enough time freaking out that his dog'll disappear, and the way he reacted when Karasu did? Bad Idea.]
Well... [He grins suddenly.] Maybe one'll turn up? Not that I'd actually wish this place on anyone.
no subject
[But yeah, it sounds pretty horrific.] I never thought twenty something women would be so difficult to come across. [Seriously, he's seen maybe two. And they're variations on the same person. And that's really confusing.]
[He considers how desperate he'll have to be before he goes looking for companionship with a man. Jesus. Pretty desperate. Niko's an affectionate guy. In cases like this it bites him in the ass.]
no subject
Maybe if you poke around the North Wing enough something'll turn up? I mean, those rooms are weird, I wouldn't put it past them to generate mock-people or-
[Wait, it sounds like he's saying Niko should find the equivalent of a hooker. Oh geeze. Kai sighs, facepalming. Please ignore him, he has no useful ideas here.]

[Here's hoping. He drops his hand to tap lightly on the table.]
After I realized I was, I wanted to avoid it. Still do, sometimes. A little while ago, she was gone. Just vanished. And...everything crumbled. Which has a lot to do with why I'm being an idiot, teaching Bakura magic.
[And touching the Ring dear Light he's never telling anyone about that. Yes Kai, come to the Dark Side, it wants you back.]
But she's here again and I'm just so happy she's okay. I don't think I can just enjoy it and be ready for things to go to hell, but if I lock her out, I'll lock everyone out. I did it once before, after my world fell to the Heartless.
[Kai's voice drops, and he lowers his head.] Took me a while to let people back in, you know? Sometimes I'm still not sure it was a good idea.
no subject
If you're going to go ahead and get close to people, whether you want to or not, it is better for both of you to be ready for the consequences. Most of these people, they are not pussies that can't handle themselves. If you get close to them, they can fight back.
no subject
I know my friends can. I guess I'll have to deal with it. I'm already trying to face other stuff I was avoiding, so why not this?
[Kai sighs, giving his head a shake before glancing up.]
I think I might be doing more growing up here than I ever would've done back home. It's kind of weird. When I get back to 'Jem - the kid I was traveling with before I was taken - she's going to think I'm an impostor or something.
Well, I guess thirteen's not such a kid anymore, and if time just keeps on while I'm here, it's really going to hurt when I see her next. She puts an awesome amount of force behind her swings. [He finally laughs at that, moving his arms to mimic swinging a stick.]
I'm hoping time really is standing still, I don't need the bruises.
no subject
You are getting to do the good parts of growing up. You should enjoy that while you can. And if you're not going to remember it anyway, you might as well see it as your own tiny life here you can treat however you please.
[He likes that way of looking at it- here, Bulgarin can't touch him. He doesn't have to worry about his cousin for a while. Money is not an issue.]
no subject
[Because of him. Because he failed. But this is some of that 'stuff' he's been avoiding, and it's going right back into the 'Ha ha, you're not here' column. He frowns at Niko for a second at the mention of memory. Wait.]
I never thought of it like that. I mean, I've always expected I'll get home and remember everything about this. I've been keeping a lot of notes, sure, but those are more for 'Jem than me. Not sure if I'd rather keep the knowledge of where I've been or lose it.
no subject
Did anyone else take what they learned back with them? [Which is a little concerning, that he doesn't know.]
no subject
[He trails off, looking thoughtful. He's not sure if her stuff had disappeared, he never got to see inside her room. Dealing with the Thief King for a glimpse? Ugh.]
When she was gone, I don't know if her stuff went too. But after she came back, she said she hadn't been home, that she was just in a sort of limbo. Not here or there. So I guess that's an option too, now. Or maybe the only one.
[Maybe no one ever leaves, they just end up in a literal nowhere and never come back. There's a pleasant thought.]
no subject
[The question is a little earnest.] If you go away from here, you are gone and that is that. You may come back, but how often do people?
You should do what you can to get out of the mindset of battle. It's one I have never been able to escape, but you still have a chance.
no subject
[Sighing, Kai folds his arms and drops his head again. To just be a teenager and not worry about what might or might not be happening at home, and to just goof off and be himself...minus the random bullshit he gets into with Bakura, anyway.]
It'd be nice. To just-
[His shoulders rise in an awkward shrug.]
I don't know. Might as well give it a shot. I've got a few years to make up for.

[Oh, but there was, and wasn't that fun? Kai's nose scrunches up at the memory.]
Guess I'm afraid of being rusty, too. Nearly got myself killed the first time, I don't need a repeat.
no subject
[He just deals out a solitaire set up so he can pick at that instead. It seems like he'll find more success there.]
She seems to be okay with just being a girl.
no subject
There's a difference between not dying and dying and coming back, you know.
[Ugh, case of the grumps settling in. Making an effort to push it away, he manages a small smile.]
She does. So.
[So. Kai really doesn't want this conversation to circle back around to sex, he finally stopped blushing.]
I'll work on things.
[Which would be 'everything'.]
no subject
Thinking about it is a start. Good luck to you, friend.
no subject
[He really does mean that; he's actually more likely to take Niko's than say, Bakura's. Though there are so many valid reasons not to listen to him. Kai grins, getting up from the table.]
Good luck with the cards, I'd better go feed myself real food. Not that I was going to eat any of this. [He gestures, face scrunching up.] I had other plans for it.
[Devious plans, but those can wait a while longer. Snickering, Kai waves a bit before heading for the door.]
