CAMPUS WIDE EVENT: SNOWED IN

[Early morning on the 15th, the building is deathly chilly as well as unusually dark. Even with the heat on people will find themselves wandering the halls and shivering, their breath fogging up in front of them. Anybody foolish enough to try and leave the building will find that the door simply won't budge due to the amount of snow piled against it, and any attempts to exit (or look) through the windows will greet them with a daunting wall of white. Even the courtyard is inaccessible, as is the door leading up to the rooftop.

Outside on the island, it seems a heavy snow storm has blanketed everything in a thick layer of white.]

((ooc: The event will last 7 days, with the first 4 being snowed-in, the 5th being a blizzard, the 6th another snow-in day, and the 7th having the snow melting. A post will be made on the 19th and 21st respectively. You can see the conditions here, and on the weekly weather sticky:

[Harriet was clearly being sarcastic, so she hardly gets what he's being all muttery about. She could obviously tell that he wasn't happy being stuck inside, but it isn't until he admits it that the reason for it dawns on her. That was right... he was probably a bit depressed from that sudden dark atmosphere. It wasn't deep enough to agitate Harriet's fairies as in the blackout, so it hadn't troubled her much beyond being strange. But Malik had reasons to be claustrophobic, if she thought about it.]

I understand. There's not much I can do about it though... unfortunately, I've yet to discover any weather magic.

[pause.]

If it's just the gloom, though...

[She does have a LOT of cards, creature and magic alike, that generate light.]

It's more than that. [He raises one hand, balling it tightly up as he explains with bitterness in his voice.]

With the way the windows are blocked... We might as well be trapped underground.

[whiterosefoes]

[ahh, so that really was it. Harriet reaches up to pat him on the shoulder, attempting to be reassuring.]

Come on, don't think of it like that. It's just snow - in a few days it'll be gone!

[As agitated as he is, though, that may not be good enough. Taking her hand back, she wraps it around the strap of her bag, looking down at it absently. Maybe she'd better offer her time...]

But, if you need something to take your mind off it, I've been getting some movies for just that purpose.

[Harriet removes the hand before Malik has a chance to grumpily brush it off. Her "silver lining" did nothing to brighten his mood--it may have even darkened it further--but her next offer was certainly a step in the right direction.]

Another movie? ...Fine, but I want to pick the title this time. [He makes it sound like he's doing her a favour.]

[She gives him a bit of a flat look - she's inviting him along to be nice, he should go with what she wants! ...But, she's still picking them out, so...]

Perhaps we can come to an agreement on one, hm?

As long as it's something I'm interested in this time.

[...Which is sort of the point of an agreement, but also the rudest thing he could have said.]

.... [She just rolls her eyes. He is literally incapable of thinking of others, isn't he? He's just lucky she has broad tastes.]

Fine then, what are you interested in?

...I don't really watch TV. What is there?

[whiterosefoes]

You want me to explain all of the film genres to you? [no. That will take forever. Harriet immediately looks for another way, and - ah! She'll just gesture to the shelf.]

... Well, see for yourself. The DVDs all have descriptions on the back of what the films are about. And you can sort of tell by the cover.

[On second thought, no he doesn't, and he's glad she doesn't try to.]

The covers...?

[That sounds easy enough. So, looking at the covers (and ignoring the descriptions) he deduces:

There are a lot of movies about a bunch of white people, specifically ones where they're just floating heads (okay, no, he gets that's just for the poster but it still amuses him).

Flipping through a few more boring looking movies, he stops at one that seems to be about a man standing between a giant woman's legs (is this some sort of pornography)? Maybe he should bring this back for Bakura... Nah.

Shift shift shift, boring, tacky, stupid looking. Oh hoh, now what's this? A movie about people who bust ghosts...? Does that mean they're "busting" their crimes or "busting" them out of jail? He decides he doesn't care and moves on.

And finally, he comes across a movie about a flaming skeleton on a motorcycle. Malik drops the other DVD he was holding entirely, looking actually excited at the sight of this one.]

Harriet!! I found something!

[whiterosefoes]

[Harriet practically stands at attention when met with this sudden burst of enthusiasm. It was very unexpected from Malik.]

All right, let me see. [...Oh, with a cover like this, she immediately understands. Ghost Rider, huh? She hasn't heard of it.]

It looks... exciting! [Nicolas Cage tho...]

[He doesn't notice her false enthusiasm, too caught up in his own as he reads the back of the dvd box.]

Right, this is what we'll watch then! [It's too late Harriet, the choice has been made.]

[Ack... damn it, Malik! She can't say anything when he's this genuinely excited, can she? That's not playing fair.

At least she's sure they could do worse. This appears to be some kind of super hero movie, those are usually good, right? ...Harriet chuckles.]

All right then!

[she's keeping her other movies for later though.]

Keh keh keh...excellent. Then let's go.

[It's totally normal to do an evil villain-esque laugh over getting to pick the movie they watch. At any rate, he's already heading out of the library and expecting Harriet to follow.]

[Sometimes, Harriet isn't sure he knows how to do any other kind of laugh. She blinks a bit.]

You're certainly eager now, aren't you...

[But she follows him anyway. Good job, Malik, you successfully picked up a chick.]

Well it looks better than the last two movies you picked. [He quips a bit cruelly as he continues to lead them down the hall.

It looks like they're heading to his room again, just like the last two "movie nights".]

[crossing her arms, she's not really thinking twice about going back to his dorm. It isn't like she could take him to hers.]

Oy, I don't appreciate your implications that I have bad taste in films! It's not like either of those were my favorites or anything.

I'm not implying anything... Hmhmhm, I'm stating a fact.

[Malik can't help but tease a little. He's in a surprisingly good mood now that he's picked a movie that looks enjoyable to him. It's not that he's forgotten about the state of the school, but this will at least help to take his mind off it for a little while.]

[whiterosefoes]

[huff] You're such an arse.

[obeytherod]

[And so the two end up in Malik's dorm, huddled together on the couch as they watched what turned out to be an increasingly disappointing movie. So mediocre it was between the battle scenes that the two of them ended up having a battle of their own--a battle of puns.

H: Who the hell is this old guy?
M: The Devil's advocate?
H: Malik... for someone who hates puns, you're certainly on a roll...
M: I like winning. And since you keep trying to top me...
H: Who said I was doing that?
M: You didn't have to say it.
H: Well, maybe I was just getting fired up!
M: Ugh, see! You did it again.

M: He missed his date.
H: I think that's the least of his worries now. And he couldn't exactly turn up like that...
M: Why not? It would really "break the ice".
H: ...

Malik totally won.

The two of them must be spending too much time around each other though, considering they blurted out the same things more than once:

H: He can't choke to death, he's a fucking skeleton!
M: Did he expect to choke a skeleton?

M: Now he made a pun.
H: Sometimes I feel like this movie is also competing against us in the pun battle...

M: What a convincing "oh my god".
H: I know, right?

Now that the movie was over, and the floor was littered with creampuffs, Malik was bored again.]

[Harriet's been flopped over her side of the couch for the last half hour of the movie, but as the credits roll and they idly murmur underwhelmed responses, she shifts upwards to find something else to do, letting the blanket fall onto her lap.

She immediately regrets that. It's still so cold, and she had been cozy even if she was bored. Visibly shuddering, she can't bring herself to get off the couch.]

Ugh...

[Malik tugs his own blanket back up, eying the title screen with disdain as he realizes that his own body was shivering just as badly.]

What now...? We only grabbed one movie, and it's still freezing.

[whiterosefoes]

Well, I had a few more in my bag by the time you'd showed up-

[in Harriet's bag: Breakfast at Tiffany's, Bridget Jones' Diary, Kate & Leopold...]

...but ah, th-those were the ones I'd watch by myself.

[that stammer was definitely owed to the chill, and not the mortifying idea of introducing Malik to romcoms. Harriet shifts back under the blanket.]

We'll figure something out. For now let's just get warm. Maybe have a chat.

[Or maybe more than that - she hadn't forgotten a few long looks given to eachother before the movie managed to draw them back in.]

On second thought, I don't want to watch another movie anyway.

[Pulling the blanket tightly around his shivering frame, Malik tightens his jaw to stop his teeth from chattering.]

Maybe we can play a game...
